As an ex-local, I’m excited to share some of the best spots to stay, eat, get married, and experience all that our beautiful town offers. I lived in Durango for 5 years while attending college at Fort Lewis, and if I could move back tomorrow, I would. <3

The Strater Hotel
Nestled in the heart of downtown, The Strater Hotel is a historic landmark and a favorite for visitors looking for an authentic Durango experience. Staying here means you’re just steps away from shops, restaurants, and the vibrant pulse of downtown. + Don’t forget to have Ghostbusters on speed dial. ;)
Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn
For those looking for modern comfort and convenience, the Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn is an excellent choice. It’s close to the train station, making it perfect if you plan to ride the scenic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The hotel offers spacious rooms, friendly service, and amenities that cater well to families and travelers alike.
Places to Eat
Durango’s food scene is a blend of local flavors, hearty meals, and friendly neighborhood spots. Whether you’re craving pizza, Mexican cuisine, or classic American fare, there’s something here for everyone. I’m serious, if you didn’t come to eat… go home!
J Bo’s Pizza: Known for its delicious thin-crust pizzas and family-friendly atmosphere, J Bo’s is a go-to for a casual meal after a day of exploring.
RGP’s: This is a hole-in-the-wall spot, and you wont be sorry you went. Great little pit stop for lunch, I highly recommend The Superman. YUM!
Rice Monkey's: If you’re in the mood for Asian-inspired cuisine, Rice Monkey’s serves flavorful dishes with a fresh twist. Hands down, best sushi in town.
El Moro: Perfect for a quick, tasty bite, El Moro offers tasty drinks, great food, but their brunch is my go-to for a more upscale meal.
Oscar's Café: A beloved local diner serving hearty breakfasts and comfort food that will fuel your day.
Getting Married in Durango
Durango offers picturesque settings for couples looking to tie the knot, from rustic mountain backdrops to elegant historic venues. The Strater Hotel is an excellent choice for a wedding venue, boasting charm and sophistication right in the heart of town.
If you prefer an outdoor ceremony, Durango’s surrounding landscapes provide stunning options—imagine exchanging vows with the San Juan Mountains as your backdrop or beside the Animas River for a peaceful, scenic setting.
Things to Do
Walking Downtown: One of the simplest yet most enjoyable ways to experience Durango is on foot. Downtown is pedestrian-friendly with charming shops, art galleries, cafes, and historic buildings. Don’t miss the chance to soak up the local atmosphere and maybe catch a street performance or two.
Ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad: This historic train trip is a must-do. It winds through breathtaking mountain scenery and gives you a glimpse into the area’s mining past. The ride is a favorite for visitors of all ages and offers a unique way to see the region’s natural beauty.
